Jan Eckert- and her two daughters, Ellie and Cary

Jan, why did you join the FCFC?

I joined FCFC because I wanted to support the establishment of a sustainable, community-owned business that provides a market for local produce and products. I want a grocery store that offers a selection of reasonably priced, healthful food items. And I like the idea that the coop would contribute to downtown revitalization by providing a place for residents to shop downtown.

How did you first hear about the coop?

When the Little Grill’s “Little Store” closed, I had heard that a group of people were exploring the feasibility of opening a food co-op in Harrisonburg. I also got on the mailing list to receive email updates about the co-op’s development.

What are your dreams for the coop?

When I lived in Washington DC, I was a member of the Takoma Park Co-op which began as small store-front operation and grew to the size of a small grocery store. My hope is that our co-op grows and prospers and is in a position to give back to the community.

What would you like to say to people out there who are thinking about buying an equity share ownership/membership?

Think of your equity share (which is fully refundable) as a positive investment in the future of our downtown and the local economy.

Thanks, Jan, for investing in the future of our downtown and the local economy!

Readers: If you are interested in sharing why you joined the coop, email your responses to the same questions above, along with a digital photo of you or your family/household, to FC2@mail.com. Questions, call Sam Nickels at 476-4180. Thanks!
