FAQs

What is a co-op?

A co-op is a business owned and democratically controlled by the people who use it. The guiding principles are equality among owners, the enrichment of the community, and the support of local sustainable products. It is neither profit-driven nor non-profit. Most profit is reinvested to improve the store. Above that, profit may be returned to the owner members according to vote by the membership.

How will it differ from a large chain grocery store?

Healthy, wholesome foods, organic produce, and environmentally sound products will be emphasized. The sale of locally grown produce and meats will be emphasized, thereby supporting local farmers. Education on healthy foods and lifestyle choices will be provided. We hope to eventually add a café offering robust soups, organic breads and sandwiches, fairly traded coffees and teas, and so on. We also plan to locate downtown where no other full-service groceries are located, thus contributing to the revitalization of downtown Harrisonburg and providing an important service for people working and living downtown.

Who can shop there?

ANYONE, member or non-member, is welcome to come and shop.

So, why become an equity owner?

  • The Economics: Owners will have the opportunity to earn patronage rebates and enjoy special discount days, and will receive discounted pricing on full cases or bag purchases. Within two to three years the investment more than pays for itself.
  • The Democracy: Owners can participate in the governance of their store by serving on the Board and committees.
  • The Future: Owners will have the satisfaction of being part of the downtown rebirth.
  • The Health of our Community: Owners will have the opportunity to become investors in the co-op and have the satisfaction of being part of the movement to bring a full-service grocery store with natural products to our area, providing healthier food for our children, more sources of local sales for our farmers, and a center of community involvement around healthy food and lifestyle.

How much will that cost?

At this time, owner equity shares are being offered at $200/share. Ask for our Subscription Agreement for further details. Shares will be redeemable, meaning when you move away or leave the coop you can sell it back to the coop.

Where will the store be?

We are committed to creating a downtown market in Harrisonburg. Location, space, parking availability and cost per square foot will all determine the best option. Several sites have been identified as strong possibilities.

When will it open?

Our sights our set on opening the store as early as Summer 2009!

Why buy a share now?

It is only by PROVING a committed interest in Harrisonburg that we can hope to obtain the necessary financing to make this dream a reality. Every new owner-member means we are closer to opening! Join us and make it happen.
